About Tom McSheehy, MSW, LSW
Tom is a licensed social worker in Illinois. Tom has been a social worker for 26 years and also taught elementary school for 21 years. He has over 35 years of experience working with parents, teachers, coaches, children, teenagers, and schools. Tom began playing team sports at the age of 6 years old and played three sports all through elementary, middle, and high school. Tom has also coached competitive sports.

Tom McSheehy MSW, LSW, has over 37 years of experience working with parents, teachers, coaches, children, teenagers, and schools. His mission has been to integrate and merge the worlds of education, mental health, and SEL. Tom taught elementary and middle school for 21 years and has been a licensed social worker for 27 years. Tom is a trauma trained therapist and has been a SEL presenter and trainer for 23 years. He is the author of the SEL curriculum, In Focus, Improving Social Emotional Intelligence, One Day at a Time.

Tom is the founder and director of Teaching Heart Institute, an organization dedicated to connecting the worlds of education and mental health and supporting teachers and parents in developing children’s and teenagersʼ Social and Emotional Intelligence.

Tom is the author of the book, In Focus: Improving Social and Emotional Intelligence, One Day at a Time, published by Thoughtful Learning. It is a brain based manual that guides teachers in doing quick, daily lessons that develop the Social and Emotional Intelligence of their students. There are three versions of the book: K-2nd grade, 3-5th grade book, and 6-8th grade book.

Along with doing trainings and presentations, Tom consults and does therapy with parents, teachers, coaches, families, and individuals. Tom’s areas of expertise are in social emotional learning, attachment, trauma, neuroscience, and neurobiology. He is a trained play therapist and done extensive training in trauma therapy including being an EMDR trained practitioner (Levels 1 and 2). He completed a two year Somatic Attachment Training. Some of the issues with which Tom works are attachment and connection, anxiety and fear, trauma, sensitivity, loss and grief, divorce, communication, building resilience, school and motivation, sports performance, self-esteem, and transitions.
